Prologue

Some people have called her a visionary. In a time when changes in our world challenge us to improve the places where we live and work, no one has confronted this challenge more fearlessly than Yeni Wong, chairperson of the board of the Institute for Taiwan-America Studies, president and CEO of Riverdale International, and sole chair of Gallery Court LLC. Standing at the helm of these companies, she has played a vital role in reviving the spirit and life of downtown Washington, DC, by developing these instrumental properties located in the heart of Chinatown.

Yeni has also taken an active role in her community, holding the position of, among others, cofounder and current chair of the Asian American Action Fund and mayor of Chinatown (known as the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association [CCBA]) for two consecutive terms. Her selfless service and business successes have earned her countless awards and accolades, including a presidential appointment. She is indeed a visionary, helping to inspire a new definition of our nation’s capital, while helping raise two beautiful children.

This book provides a comprehensive view of Yeni’s insights and her journey to strive to be the best. From her first day as chairperson of CCBA, Yeni Wong made it clear that it was a new era in Chinatown. Surrounded by enthusiastic community leaders, lord privy seal of CCBA in hand, she offered an unmistakable message: to help Chinese immigrants and to protect and further the welfare of Chinese Americans.

This has been a consistent theme throughout Yeni’s journey and through her early years and while working in grassroots politics. As a successful female entrepreneur and philanthropist, she has fought for all Chinese Americans—especially working families and their children around the Chinatown area in Washington, DC.

She became famous for serving as the first female mayor of Chinatown, and she will always be a role model for women and girls because of her trailblazing accomplishments. But most of all, she will be remembered for the results she’s delivered, the people she’s helped, and the progress she’s achieved. Yeni will continue to march on, providing assistance to those who are in need and standing up for their rights.

Writing a book can be a long and difficult process. I am fortunate to have had many friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who rendered help in many ways that they may not be aware of. I am indebted to many people for corrections and clarifications, but I must take full responsibility for any surviving errors; I will be grateful for any rectifications and suggestions from readers, which I can incorporate in subsequent editions.

For various insights and assistance, it is a pleasure to acknowledge my debts to Dennis F. Poindexter and Curt Hansen, while Andy Wang offered timely advice. Finally, I wish to give thanks to my wife, Grace, who patiently allowed me to take time for this book.
